Recife, Brazil

Recife Brazil

Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, is in the northeast of Brazil and is a mix of modern high‑rise buildings and old baroque churches. Recife is the most important commercial centre in northeastern Brazil. The city sits where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, and it is a major Atlantic port. Its many rivers and bridges shape the city’s geography and have earned it the nickname “the Brazilian Venice”. Recife is a modern city full of affluent seafront skyscrapers and stunning beaches, but it also has an interesting old town, which includes the oldest synagogue in the Americas, colourful colonial houses and many 18th‑century baroque churches. Nearby Porto de Galinhas beach has repeatedly been voted the best beach in Brazil. Recife is a lively city with a vibrant cultural life and is also an excellent base for visiting nearby Olinda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
